Definition of Hallmark event: major one time or recurring events of limited duration, developed to enhange the awereness, appeal and profability of a tourism destination in a short or long term. Such events rely their success on uniquness, status, or timely significance to create interest and attract attention.

THE PITFALLS OF EVENTS TOURISM

-         IGNORANCE of dimentions, nature, power of tourism

-         LACK OF ABILITY to determine capacity i.e. sustainable (long term) development

-         LACK OF ABILITY to manage tourism and control development

-         LACK OF APPRETIATION that tourism is dinamic, and causes change and response to change

-         LACK OF AGGREMENT over levels of develoment, over control, over redirection of tourism.

 

“Event tourism” was a new term in the 1980’s but it has become firmly established as a major compenent of special toursim and a significant ingredient in destination and place merketing strategies. Because events help meet many social, economic and cultural environmental roles, most comminities and destinations are already involved.
